Unifor participated in Labour Day parades and events across Canada today, sending the strong message that this is the time to fight for workers, whether it’s at bargaining tables, on picket lines or in the streets.
In her uplifting speech in Toronto, Unifor National President Lana Payne welcomed the thousands of new members who joined the union since last Labour Day.
Unifor Retired Workers from across Canada remain active in retirement, through participation in their local Retired Worker Chapters and geographical Retired Worker area councils.
The General Assembly of the United Nations first observed this day on Dec. 14, 1990, to draw attention to the important contribution of seniors and to changing demographics of the world, including the greying of the population, or the "age of aging."
On October 1, we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons.
First observed in 1991, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated this day to draw attention to the important contribution of seniors and to changing demographics: the greying of the population, or the "age of ageing." We mark this day as a way of providing education on public issues and concerns, to mobilize for change and action and to celebrate achievements.
Unifor retirees from across the country participated in the first virtual Retired Workers Council, which took place online September 7-9, 2021.
“Retirees have learned a new way of doing activism, as we have learned a new way to deliver workshops, programs and in fact this Council,” said Barb Dolan, Unifor Director of Retired Workers, as she welcomed the delegates. “We’re moving forward and doing the business that we need to do of our union and of the retired workers.”
