TORONTO, Nov. 1, 2016 /CNW/ - On the verge of a strike, Unifor reaches a tentative agreement with Ford to secure its Canadian manufacturing footprint and reinforce the economic pattern established with General Motors (GM).
As Unifor activists began their lobby of MPs on the TPP, news came that the deadline for public consultations has been extended.
The House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade announced that public submissions on the deal can now be made until until January 27, 2017. The deadline had been October 31.
This is the third time consultations have been extended. The original deadline was April 30, which was initially extended to June 30, before being extended a second time to October 31.
A tentative collective agreement was reached, averting a strike at Ford. The contract is unanimously recommended by the entire Master and Local Bargaining committees. Unifor members will have the final say on the tentative agreement when a vote is held at local membership meetings on Saturday November 5 and Sunday, November 6.

OTTAWA, Oct. 31, 2016 /CNW/ - Unifor members from across Canada are in Ottawa this week to warn MPs about the dangers of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal and to urge them not to ratify it.
"Unifor is a strong believer in trade, but trade must be fair and it must serve the needs of working people and our communities first," said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.
As public consultations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership come to a close, Unifor is in Ottawa to meet with MPs and urge them to vote against ratifying the TPP, and to start building a Fair Trade Future.
The work started early, with politicians and Parliamentary staff waking up on Halloween to radio and newspaper ads telling them Unifor was in town. Meetings are planned for the entire week. Stay tuned for updates.
Negotiations continue to be a waiting game with Ford. While talks have neared towards the pattern, we remain a significant distance apart in achieving our priorities. The union expressed clearly to Ford that the union will not accept offsets to reach the pattern negotiated with GM and FCA. Our bargaining committees are firm in what needs to be done to reach a fair deal. It's time the employer make a reasonable and fair offer.
Progress is slow but negotiations are set to continue through the weekend. “While Ford might want balk at our priorities and the pattern Agreement set with GM, our members are clear, we will not go backwards and accept rollbacks or concessions,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. “In every round of Detroit Three bargaining our top priority has been and remains focused on securing a future for good, full-time unionized jobs in the auto sector.”
