On Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), March 31, Unifor stands firmly with trans, non-binary, two-spirited, and gender-diverse people.

The Trans Day of Visibility is a call-to-action. Recognizing human rights should not always be about defending against attacks. TDOV reminds us that we have the power to lead by example, to build a more just and equitable world now and for the next generation. 

November 25 marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). These sixteen days, recognized internationally, are an opportunity to reflect and mobilize to end gender-based violence, a commitment we solemnly renew on December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

This weekend was full of Pride as Unifor members participated in both the Halifax Pride and St. John’s Pride parades.

Members of the Atlantic Regional Council’s LGBT Standing Committee organized the floats and got the word out to Locals to join in demonstrating the union’s continuing and ever-present commitment to inclusion and equality.

On this International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, Unifor reflects on lives impacted by hate and reaffirms our commitment to bringing working people together with respect and shared purpose in times of growing division. This year’s theme, “The Power of Communities,” reminds us that lasting change doesn’t come from individuals acting alone—it comes from the strength of our collective voices. At Unifor, we see this power every day in our workplaces, locals, and activist networks.

In the face of mounting hate, fueled by far-right rhetoric and emboldened by politicians who choose to sow division and hatred instead of fostering unity, our union remains unwavering in its commitment to justice, equality, and solidarity. 

Trans rights under attack

Unifor representatives recently participated in the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA) World Conference 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa, joining over 1,400 activists and trade unionists from more than 140 countries. 

The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), observed on November 20, is a solemn occasion to remember and honour those who have tragically lost their lives due to ignorance and hatred, targeted solely because of their transgender or gender non-conforming identity.
