KITCHENER-WATERLOO—Unifor is asking for the public’s patience during the delays in transit service resulting from the picket lines and legal strike action of CUPE Local 1656.  

Dear Members,

It has been a disappointing week for Unifor/our bargaining representatives across Canada, the company simply refuses to take negotiations seriously and didn’t adequately prepare to bargain a new contract.

Unifor began bargaining with the DHL Express Canada six months ago on Oct. 1, 2024, but to-date, we’re still waiting for a concrete response to address more than half of our demands.

Even the presence of a mediator, requested by DHL, was not enough to get the company to bargain.

VANCOUVER –Transit workers at Transdev in Cowichan Valley, B.C., went on strike early this morning, after last-minute talks broke down Friday between Unifor and the employer, following weeks of stalled negotiations.

“We support our members as they seek a fair deal and hope Transdev gets back to the table quickly,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. 

“As I’ve said before, strike action is not something we take lightly, but we will continue until our members are shown respect by the company.”

VANCOUVER – Unifor, which represents Walmart Canada truck drivers in British Columbia, is deeply concerned by today’s announcement that Canada Cartage is purchasing Walmart Fleet ULC, which now delays bargaining that was scheduled for tomorrow, Jan. 31.

“Warehousing and logistics workers have a right to a union, and we expect the company to bargain a first collective agreement with our members as soon as possible,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.

VANCOUVER –Heading towards a Feb. 8 strike deadline, Unifor members at Transdev (formerly First Transit) in Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island will not wear their uniforms until the company comes to the table with a fair deal.

“Transit workers move our communities,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Our members demand respect from the company, and we will support them as they bargain a fair collective agreement.”

Metro Vancouver and Victoria transit operators travelled to Seattle this month to pay their respects at the funeral of Shawn Yim, a King County Metro bus driver was fatally attacked while on the job. The Canadian delegation joined transit workers from across the region in a solemn display of solidarity and support for Yim’s grieving family and co-workers.

VANCOUVER – Members of Transdev (formerly First Transit) in Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island at Unifor Local 114 have voted unanimously in favour of strike action if an agreement cannot be reached with the company.

“Transit workers are an integral vein to our society, safely and efficiently getting the public to work, school and wherever they have to go,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Strike action is not something we take lightly, but our members are prepared, if necessary.”
