Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement
The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union has been ratified by both the Canadian House of Commons and the European Parliament. This allows most of the deal to be implemented.
For full implementation, however, the deal must still be ratified by each of the individual member states of the European Union. This is far from certain, and will be a very long process.
Unifor will continue to fight with allies in this country and in Europe to stop full implementation. With CETA's Investment Court System (its investor-state dispute mechanism) not in effect until all members of the EU ratify the deal, it is vital that the fight against CETA continue.
On April 13, 2017, Unifor National President Jerry Dias attended a Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs as it reviewed a bill to implement CETA in Canada. He told them that rather than review implementation, they should reject the CETA - saying there has never been a proper review, and that there have been too many changes since a partial text was first released.
