Workers at Select Finishing in Wallaceburg, Ont., which provides custom coatings for metals and plastics, including on vehicles, are celebrating being new members at Unifor.

“Every new unit in the Independent Auto Parts Supplier Sector (IPS) is great news,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.

“One of the best ways for workers to protect and improve their jobs is to form a union, especially those in industries that are feeling the largest threat of Trump’s tariffs. We thank you for choosing us to have your back.”

The company has other Ontario locations that are not unionized, including Windsor and Corunna.

The 188 new union members organized at all four of the company's four Wallaceburg locations, applying for certification together.

Select Finishing workers joined Unifor because they were looking to level the playing field with overtime compensation, an end to favouritism, and improved wages and health and safety. The worker’s organizing campaign with Unifor began in early March 2025 and the group voted the join the union in mid-April.

The workers in Wallaceburg are sanders, painters and material handlers. There are Skilled Trades members and one apprentice.

This is yet another win in the IPS sector. Most recently, Unifor welcomed 100 new members from Flex N Gate Seeburn last August, approximately 800 members from F&P Tottenham in April 2024, and 600 new members from TRQSS Windsor in 2023.

“Our union is growing stronger every day, with every new member,” said Justin Gniposky, Director of Unifor’s Organizing Department.

“We all know there is strength in numbers and at a time when it’s all about building Canadian and buying Canadian, having Select Finishing workers join Unifor creates more worker power.”
