HALIFAX-Unifor members at Parkland and Martha’s Place retirement homes in Nova Scotia have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action as contract talks continue across the three worksites. Members have delivered a mandate to negotiate wages aligned with long-term care workers in the province.
“Our caregiver members have spoken with one voice,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.
“These strike votes show the strength and solidarity of care and service workers who know their value. They’re standing together to demand agreements that recognize their hard work and the essential services they provide every day.”
Members at Parkland Truro Local 4619 and Parkland Cape Breton Local 4600 voted 100% in favour of a strike. Members at Martha’s Place Antigonish Local 2107 voted 87% in favour of a strike.
“As the cost of living continues to rise, these workers shouldn’t have to fall behind,” said Jennifer Murray, Unifor Atlantic Regional Director.
“They provide essential care around the clock, and they deserve wages and working conditions that reflect the value of that work. Our members are united and ready to stand up for the fair contracts they’ve earned.”
A conciliation meeting is scheduled this week, on Feb. 17, 2026, with a government-appointed conciliator.
Further updates will be shared as bargaining continues.
Unifor represents around 90 retirement home workers at these locations that provide care to seniors 24/7.
