On June 27, Unifor submitted an intervention to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) regarding its review of the conventional television system in Canada (popularly referred to as ‘Let’s Talk TV’). The union offers a series of recommendations it feels will help strengthen the television system now and for the future, with specific emphasis on local programming and Canadian content. In its intervention, the union caution’s against the Commission’s proposals to loosen rules designed to enhance Canadian programming, warning that it could significantly undermine the economics of the television system. The union also fears the Commission is taking too strong a position to advocate consumer choice, at the expense of jobs, production and Canadian programming. Unifor, along with other stakeholders, commissioned an ‘Environmental Scan’ that examines (among other things) the potential impact on jobs that may result from the Commission’s proposed reforms over the next three to seven years.
