Unifor Local 892 members at Mosaic's Esterhazy potash operations have ratified a new three-year collective agreement, delivering wage increases, stronger pension benefits and significant improvements to family and health coverage.

"This agreement shows what members can achieve when they stand together at the bargaining table," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "Local 892 members secured strong economic gains, but they also won something more: better support for their families, including extended benefit coverage for loved ones after a member's death."

In addition to the wage and pension gains, the union also secured a new lifetime benefit of $5,000 toward fertility treatment. The agreement further extends health care coverage for the dependents of an employee who passes, from six months to two years. That extension is retroactive and will apply to any employee currently within the existing six-month coverage window.

Since the workplace death of Tyrone Macleod, Unifor has been pushing for a transparent investigation with involvement from the union that ensures that whatever failings resulted in the loss of life can never happen again.

“Workplace fatalities are a tragedy and should never happen,” said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. “But when disaster strikes, we want make sure that the company is doing more to care for our loved ones.”

Local 892 represents 750 workers at the potash mine.
