Empress hotel workers ratify collective agreement

Members of Unifor Local 4276 have ratified a tentative agreement reached last week by 92%. The three-year deal sees the hotel workers get a wage boost and policy changes that reduce housekeepers’ workload.

“In the hospitality sector, a union equals a living wage and job security,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Director. “We’re very proud of the tenacity shown by Local 4276 to get to a deal.”

The union had issued 72-hour strike notice after progress slowed at the bargaining table late last month. During the late hours of August 30, the bargaining committee hammered out details that include a wage increase of almost nine per cent over three years, improvements to ‎the pension plan and benefits, a paid Woman's Advocate position, paid education leave increase, limits on mandatory overtime, and housekeeping workload relief.

Unifor Local 4276 represents almost 500 Empress workers in housekeeping, culinary, grounds keeping, serving, guest relations, maintenance, and engineering.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
