VAL-D’OR, Q.C.– Unifor is deeply concerned by the announcement of the closure of the Chantiers Chibougamau mill in Val-d’Or, Quebec, a decision that directly affects the workers represented by the union, and demonstrates once again the vulnerability of Quebec’s forestry sector.
The purchase of the mill by Chantiers Chibougamau as part of its acquisition of the manufacturing facilities of Interfor, had raised hopes in the region. For many, this transaction signalled a possible revival and a long-term commitment to wood processing in Val-d’Or.
However, given the major challenges of recent years, including restrictions related to the protection of woodland caribou, the impact of forest fires, market volatility and U.S.-imposed duties, this closing unfortunately does not come as a surprise.
“This announcement serves as a harsh reminder that the model underpinning the forestry sector is not sustainable,” said Unifor Quebec Director Daniel Cloutier. “The closing of the Val-d’Or mill illustrates, once again, that we can no longer be content with temporary solutions. Quebec urgently needs to shift gears and review its strategy for the development of the forest industry. What we need now is ambition, leadership and a willingness to work with all stakeholders, including unions.”
Unifor is calling on the Quebec government to take the lead in rethinking public forest management so as to ensure long-term stability for workers, while respecting environmental obligations. The union also stressed the importance of providing immediate support to those affected by the closure, including requalification programs, income maintenance and investment in regional development.
Unifor is the largest private sector union in Quebec and Canada, representing more than 320,000 members in all sectors of the economy. Unifor fights for the rights of all workers. It also fights for equality and social justice at home and abroad and aspires to bring about progressive change for a better future. In Quebec, Unifor represents nearly 55,000 members and is affiliated with Quebec’s largest central labour body, the Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (FTQ).
