Regina—Premier Brad Wall’s open musing about privatizing SaskTel reeks of desperation and breaks a key election promise he made on March 15, 2016.

“Saskatchewan’s Crown corporations are like the goose that lays golden eggs—we need them for the long term value, not some panicked sell-off,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Director. “Privatization means higher prices. Period.”

During the 2016 provincial election, the Sask Party explicitly promised not to privatize any of the Crown corporations listed in the Crown Corporation Protection Act, namely SaskTel, SaskPower, SaskEnergy, SGI.

“The Sask Party is desperately looking for a short-term fix to get the province back into the black,” said Warnock. “But selling-off Crown corporations would be a disaster for the long-term health of hospital and school funding.”

In fall 2016, Unifor launched a campaign to protect Saskatchewan’s unique and profitable Crown corporations, including this radio advertisement: https://soundcloud.com/unifor/dont-sell-our-sasktel Unifor’s campaign page can be found at unifor.org/sasktel
