The third in a series of factsheets about Alberta Bill 47 deals with the insidious changes proposed by Premier Jason Kenney to medical review panels.
“Bill 47 is a betrayal of the principle that workers and employers should work collaboratively to make workplaces safe,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “Bill 47 is an unprecedented attack on workers’ involvement in their own health and safety.”
The new factsheet describes how Bill 47 dismantles medical review panels in favour of a roster of physicians selected by the government’s Workers’ Compensation Board. The bill also scraps the Deputy Commissioner role, scaling back the staff responsible for oversight.
Unifor members in Alberta have been fighting back against the provincial changes to union rights and occupational health and safety. On December 10, 2020, Unifor members will be participating in “Unifor Proud”, a day to wear union swag and show solidarity across the province. Pictures will be posted with the hashtag #UniforProud.
