In 2021, Unifor will continue to promote the United Nations' World Water Day to join the nationwide mobilization to fight for safe drinking water in Indigenous communities.
Auditor General Karen Hogan's February report to Parliament spelled out how Indigenous Services Canada is failing to ensure all Indigenous communities have safe drinking water.
The findings are stark: out-of-date policies and historic underfunding for the basic operation, maintenance and staffing of water systems are to blame for drinking water advisories that remain a chronic problem in many communities. The report calls for much needed reforms to improve access to safe water.
"The 2019 election promise was explicit: safe water for all Indigenous communities by March 2021," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. "Progress to-date is not acceptable. During this pandemic, safe water is more important than ever."
This upcoming World Water Day, join other Unifor member in the U.N. campaign to "Value Water":
