Toronto—Unifor supports the Government of Canada’s new complaint to the World Trade Organization WTO) over the United States’ unfair trade tariffs on the forestry sector.

“The U.S. is trying to bully us, and we’re not going to stand for it,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “Canada’s forestry sector is following the rules and we’re confident that we will prevail—again—in international tribunals.”

The Trump government’s re-introduction of duties on Canadian softwood and newsprint exports will cost the industry billions and job loss could be as high as 25,000. International courts have consistently over-ruled U.S.-imposed duties on Canadian lumber.

“Make no mistake, these tariffs are unfair and illegal,” said Scott Doherty, Assistant to the Unifor National President. “The impact on communities across Canada is significant, and reversing the tariffs has to be a top priority for the federal government.”
