BCRC 2023 Resolutions

BC Regional Council Resolution #1
Supporting a Sustainable Forestry Sector in BC

Unifor BC Regional Council Will:

  • Give all BC locals campaign tools to lobby federal, provincial and local governments, Indigenous communities, local communities and other forestry industry stakeholders.
  • Develop with stakeholders comprehensive forestry strategies that will:
  1. End raw log exports
  2. Increase funding to the Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC)
  3. Access waste wood
  4. Increase funding for access to wood damaged by wildfires
  5. Limit pellet plant access to whole logs that could used elsewhere in the higher value added chain
  6. Address the challenges of lack of fibre access due to forest fires, flooding, climate change, and the need for habitat conservation.
  • Fight for a clear vision for a “working forest,” one that protects natural spaces and habitats, while also supporting a responsible, sustainable and inclusive forestry industry, all within the bounds of our commitment to Reconciliation and Indigenous autonomy.
  • Participate actively in the development of a sustainable jobs program for the province’s forestry sector, ensuring that forestry workers are provided with employment, training, financial and other transitional supports as BC’s forestry sector continues to transform and undergo the typical “boom and bust” cycle.
  • Participate in a Forestry Roundtable with other Unions and stakeholders.
  • Report back the locals in six (6) months and at next years Regional Council on the actions taken to fulfill these commitments.

BC Regional Council Resolution #2
Critical Illness Coverage

Unifor BC Regional Council Will:

Encourage all BC locals to bargain Critical Illness coverage in their Health and Welfare Plans as our members and their families experience this shortfall in coverage more and more; and
In the event of a critical health emergency, such as cancer, a heart attack, a stroke, organ transplants/failure, or a Coronary bypass, critical illness insurance could be the only thing standing between you and financial ruin.

The exorbitant costs of treating life-threatening illnesses are usually more than any standard health insurance plan will cover.

Critical illness insurance provides additional coverage for medical emergencies in combination with disability insurance should a member become seriously ill.
