TORONTO – Northstar Aerospace threatens further legal action as Unifor plans a public demonstration in Milton to demand the company fund the pension plan deficit.

“Northstar is acting like a classic bully by threatening workers and our union, for exercising their legal right to demonstrate,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. “Retirees are facing a $200 monthly pension cut. Instead of negotiating a solution, this company is using its financial resources to erect fences, hire security and fight against what is moral and just.”

Unifor is holding a rally to demand that Northstar fund the pension deficit before it closes its Milton facility at the end of September.

  • WHAT: Unifor rally and information picket at Northstar Milton plant
  • WHERE: 180 Market Drive, Milton at Highway 401 and Regional Road 25
  • WHEN: Thursday, September 7 at 2:00 p.m. ET
  • WHO: Jerry Dias, Unifor National President, Chris Buckley, Ontario Federation of Labour President, Naureen Rizvi, Unifor Ontario Regional Director and Unifor Local 112 retirees

After months of being stonewalled by Northstar, Unifor was left with no choice and on August 10 initiated an action at the Milton plant to defend retired members. Since then, Northstar has targeted workers and the union for undertaking political action. The Company terminated three workers, suspended three others, and has attempted to restrict workers ability to access their elected Unifor union representatives. Northstar even took the step of issuing a legal threat to the President of the Ontario Federation of Labour, who was invited to address the rally.

Dias said, “Every worker has the right to legally protest and our union will not be threatened or intimidated. This is about people’s lives, it’s about respect for workers and a decent living for retirees - we are not going away.”
