ADVISORY: Unifor Celebrates Labour Day

TORONTO - On Monday September 4, Unifor will join workers, unions and the Canadian labour movement to mark Labour Day with a celebration in Toronto.

This Labour Day marks the fourth anniversary of the formation of Unifor, Canada's largest union in the private sector. The union has been a strong advocate for good jobs and equity, through participation in the fight for $15 and fairness, ongoing opposition to racism and other oppression, and by pushing back against bad trade deals and tariffs like NAFTA and President Trump's unfair softwood lumber tariffs. Unifor calls for fair international trade that benefits workers, not free trade deals that give more power to corporations at the expense of good jobs and public services.

"Our solidarity in Toronto will show that Unifor members are united with all working people in the fight back against growing right-wing influences," said Naureen Rizvi, Ontario Regional Director.  "From free-trade deals to poverty wages, to increasingly racist events that attempt to divide us, we will continue to speak up and act for justice."

Jerry Dias, the union's National President, will be in Mexico City for the NAFTA trade talks as the second round of renegotiations are underway, but he will be available to speak with the media remotely. Dias said "Unifor is united with union members and non-unionized workers not just in Canada, but also in the US, Mexico, and around the world. The strength of organized labour comes through our solidarity to build a better world."
