Unifor members at Active Dynamics in Scarborough, Ont. went on strike at 6 a.m. on Oct. 19, 2026, seeking better wages, improvements to benefits, and stronger union representation in the workplace.
“Our members at Active Dynamics deserve wages that keep pace with the cost-of-living and benefits that meet their families’ needs,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.
“Unifor stands firmly behind these manufacturing workers as they fight for a fair contract.”
The 240 members of Unifor Local 591-G manufacture exhaust systems for non-auto-related engines such as tractors and ATVs. They work as welders, machine operators, painters, and assemblers.
Alongside wages, a key issue in bargaining is a benefits package that has not been improved in more than 20 years. Workers are seeking coverage that better reflects the cost of accessing care.
The members are also raising restrictions on unionized workplace representation. According to the local, stewards are required to conduct union business during their lunch breaks, making their ability to represent members a sticking point in bargaining.
Members turned out in strong numbers to form an enthusiastic picket line and stood together to demand improvements to their working conditions.
The bargaining unit includes many newcomers to Canada, with members from Tamil, Filipino, Caribbean and other communities, struggling to keep up with cost-of-living increases.
“I am proud of these members and their fight to get fair wage increases, improve benefits which have not changed in decades, and to have stronger rights for stewards and health and safety reps,” said Local 591-G President Burke Moffat.
This unit previously went on strike in 2023 in a dispute that lasted five days.
