Unifor members from across the country gathered at the Unifor Family Education Centre in Port Elgin from September 25 to 27 for a weekend focused on strengthening recreation across the union.
“The Recreation Conference highlighted the important role recreation can play in strengthening union solidarity,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “When we create opportunities for members and their families to come together, we’re building the relationships, community and sense of belonging that make our union stronger.”
The conference theme was “Build Back Better: Revisit, Renew, Recharge,” with participants sharing ideas, learning from one another and exploring new possibilities for recreation activities and events across the union.
“Our Recreation Council is not about adding another obligation to everyone’s calendar,” said Unifor National Secretary-Treasurer Len Poirier. “It’s about creating opportunities for our members and families to come together, relax, laugh and build relationships outside of their area and place of work.”
“Many times, Unifor uses such opportunities to support the charities and social partners, raising much needed funds for the communities we live in as well,” Poirier continued.
After an extended absence, the conference provided an opportunity for members to discuss how to establish and strengthen Recreation Committees in their locals and communities across the country, while looking at ways to make recreation a more active part of union life.
“Our goal is to have active, vibrant and engaged Recreation Councils in every corner of our great union — from coast to coast to coast,” said Unifor Senior Direcor John Aman. “It’s about connecting with our members in their communities, building pride in their union and giving back, as we always do.”
Throughout the weekend, participants explored ideas for recreational activities and events centred around shared interests, including sports, social gatherings and other opportunities for members and their families. Unifor already hosts a variety of recreation activities throughout the year, including bowling and golf tournaments, NFL and NHL fantasy draft leagues, Membership Appreciation Days, barbecues and more.
As part of the weekend, a small group of conference participants also attended the Battle at Port Elgin curling tournament at the Port Elgin Curling Club. Unifor sponsored the event, giving participants a chance to support a local event while taking part in the wider Port Elgin community.
The weekend was about more than coming up with new events. It was about finding new ways to build community, have fun and strengthen the bonds that extend beyond the workplace — and sending members home with new ideas, renewed energy and excitement to bring back to their locals and communities.
