Temporary Job Posting – Legal Advisor

Unifor is currently seeking a lawyer specializing in labour law to fill one (1) temporary vacancy (maternity leave replacement for a period of eighteen months) in the Legal Department at its office in Montreal.

Unifor’s Legal Department comprises a team of six (6) lawyers in Toronto and two (2) in Montreal. Reporting directly to the Quebec Director, the successful candidate will be required to work for the Quebec Director and, with the Director’s authorization, he/she will also work with the three (3) assistants, the team of service representatives, the other legal advisor in the Montreal office, as well as the five (5) lawyers who make up Unifor Quebec’s arbitration department and the administrative support staff.

The duties and responsibilities of the legal advisor include the following:

  • Advise and provide legal opinions to the executive officers and national representatives on all legal matters relating to the organization’s activities.
  • Act as legal counsel for the union before the courts of general jurisdiction, administrative tribunals and arbitration bodies in order to protect and advance the legal interests of the union and its members.
  • The successful candidate will, among other things, be required to handle matters relating to certification, complaints under Quebec’s Labour Code or the Canada Labour Code, access to information, insolvency, and grievance and dispute arbitration.
  • Provide legal updates and develop and lead in-house training sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Expertise in labour and employment law (provincial and federal).
  • Advanced skills in critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated sound judgement, discretion and the ability to work under pressure while protecting the confidentiality of information.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the labour movement in Quebec.
  • The candidate must be a member in good standing of the Quebec Bar. Experience in employment law is an asset.

Salary and benefits:

This is a temporary position that we are seeking to fill immediately.

The salary and benefits associated with this position are in accordance with the collective agreement of Unifor’s Canadian National Representatives Union (CNRU) and notably include the following benefits:

  • Salary range: $101,847.72 - $148,096.78 per year
