This National Nursing Week, Unifor proudly celebrates the nurses whose skill, compassion, and expertise are essential to strong health care teams and quality patient care across Canada.
From hospitals and social services, long-term care homes to clinics, community care, home care, and emergency services, nurses provide skilled, dedicated care every single day.
They are caregivers, advocates, mentors, and leaders who hold our health care system together through some of its greatest challenges.
This year’s National Nursing Week theme, “Experts in Care, Fighting for Change,” recognizes the expertise, leadership, and advocacy nurses bring to every workplace and every patient interaction.
At a time when Canada’s public health care system is under immense strain, we cannot afford to lose a single nurse.
Yet too many are facing burnout, chronic understaffing, violence in the workplace, wage pressures, and increasing demands with fewer resources.
Governments and employers must stop treating nurses as expendable and start recognizing them as the foundation of a functioning public health care system.
Unifor continues to call for urgent investments in staffing, safer working conditions, better retention strategies, improved mental health supports, and respect for all nursing classifications. We need policies that strengthen public health care, not privatization schemes that drain resources and staff away from the public system.
Nurses are not just part of health care, they are central to its success.
Their knowledge, experience, and dedication transform lives every day, often under incredibly difficult circumstances. This week, and every week, we thank nurses for the care they provide, the advocacy they lead, and the strength they show in fighting for a stronger, more equitable health care system for everyone.
To all nurses represented by Unifor and across Canada, thank you. Your work matters. Your voices matter. And your fight for better care and better workplaces matters to us all.
