All Unifor local union elections must be conducted in accordance with Unifor's Constitution and Unifor Policies.

According to Article 15.A.8 of the Unifor Constitution: "Each Local Union shall establish its own set of rules to govern all of its elections. The rules must be consistent with the rules outlined in the Policy Regarding Local Union Elections, made by the National Union [...]" as well as follow the additional provisions listed in the article.

Our Constitution and policies protect members’ right to participate in the democratic governance and debates of the union, including the right to free speech and meaningful participation. Those rights do not extend to personal attacks and must be exercised in a manner that does not undermine the dignity, safety, or equal participation of others, and in an environment free from discrimination and harassment.

Unifor reminds all local unions that election debates and materials should be based on fair and accurate statements and an avoidance of personal, abusive and harassing attacks on other candidates. Election communications may impact the public perception of the whole union and harm the union’s collective bargaining relationships as well as our reputation in broader society.

Harassment, discrimination and violence within the union environment all violate the Unifor Constitution, are a serious affront to worker solidarity and undermine our collective efforts to build a fair and just world. Candidates and other members are reminded that conduct during an election may be subject to Unifor’s discrimination and harassment policies.

The Constitution, the Policy Regarding Local Union Elections, and the Procedure Policy on Constitutional Matters also outline a process for complaints or concerns with regards to local union elections. Concerns and questions should first be raised with the local union elections committee. A formal request for election review must be filed to the Local Union within the timelines set out in the Constitution and above policies.
