Unifor recently took part in the General Assembly on Trade Unionism, a unique forum for reflection in Quebec that brought together over 500 activists from the province’s main union organizations. The aim of this initiative was to re-examine the role and approach of the labour movement and to identify concrete solutions for dealing with current and future challenges.
“Quebec has a strong trade union tradition that is deeply rooted in its communities. The General Assembly is a unique opportunity to take a step back, listen to what our members have to say and chart a path forward together that addresses the realities we face here. At Unifor, we are proud to contribute to this collective reflection,” said Daniel Cloutier, Unifor Quebec Director.
Launched a year ago, the process involved a wide-ranging consultation with members from the different union organizations. A clear conclusion emerged from this exercise: despite changes in the world of work, trade unionism continues to play an essential role in defending rights, improving working conditions and addressing the economic constraints affecting workers.
The work of the assembly focused on several fundamental issues, including the day-to-day commitment and engagement of workers, the ability of organizations to mobilize and exert influence, and how to reinforce collective action in a shifting context.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of building a movement that better reflects the diversity of workplaces by giving greater prominence to young people, people of immigrant origin, the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and workers in precarious situations. Maintaining strong democratic practices within organizations also stood out as a key concern.
Over the coming months, the ideas and proposals that emerged from the assembly’s proceedings will form the basis for the development of a comprehensive action plan for the future of trade unionism in Quebec.
