At the opening of a new Ottawa long-term care centre, Unifor was ready to welcome a new unit of workers into the union. Workers at Southbridge Ottawa joined Unifor Local 8300, adding 150 new members in positions such as PSW, RPNs, RNs, maintenance, housekeeping, laundry, cooks, dietary aides, and recreation staff.
“I’m very proud to welcome these health care workers into our union,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “They provide important services and care and are part of the backbone of a strong health care system.”
Unifor Local 8300 Vice-President Norma Laury, Health Care Director Kellee Janzen, and national staff welcomed the workers on their first days of the facility being open, sharing information about the union.
“We’ve had such a welcome reception, I even met some members who had been Local 8300 members at their last workplace, and now they’re bringing that knowledge of the union to Southbridge,” said Laury. “This is a brand-new facility, and everyone was excited to welcome their first residents and get to know the staff and Unifor team.”
Southbridge Ottawa is a 192-bed facility located in Nepean, south of Ottawa. Unifor represents workers at additional Southbridge homes across Ontario including Hallowell House in Picton, ON.
