Unifor looks forward to continuing the union’s collective bargaining relationship with LG Energy Solution (LGES) following the announcement that it will end its joint-venture partnership with Stellantis and assume full ownership of the NextStar Energy battery plant in Windsor, Ontario.

The union commends LGES for their versatility in pivoting to maintain production in a changing marketplace and for LGES’s ongoing commitment to Canadian workers, including approximately 800 represented by Unifor.

Last November, NextStar Energy announced it would start producing a new battery for energy storage systems (ESS) at the Windsor plant, while also retaining the capability to make electric vehicles batteries. This production pivot happened after electric vehicle battery demand failed to meet forecasts as the U.S. administration pulled back on electrification policies.

Local 444 members at NextStar will continue to be employed under the terms of their collective agreement, which is set to expire in July of this year.

Unifor continues to demand that Stellantis fulfil its outstanding obligations to members at the Brampton Assembly Plant, which remains idled.
