Front-end loaded wage increases are a key highlight of a new collective agreement ratified recently by Unifor members at the Sobeys Retail Support Centre in Whitby-Ajax.
“Unifor members are the backbone of Sobey’s warehousing in this region,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Congratulations to this team for securing a fair contract.”
Other highlights include a signing bonus, increases up to $1.00 per hour in shift premiums, improved vacation time, and improved seniority, bereavement and mileage provisions. Local 1090 members boot allowance will rise to $175 per year.
“When warehouse workers work together to bargain with the employer, good things happen,” said Ontario Regional Director Samia Hashi. “That’s why Unifor is continuing to expand the WarehouseWorkersUnited campaign: to help more warehouse workers benefit from the ‘union advantage’, including the under-represented workers in Amazon and Walmart facilities.”
The contract will expire in February 2031. Local 1090 represents approximately 500 workers in warehouse support, utilities, forklift operation, shipping and receiving, and stock selectors.
