This weekend was full of Pride as Unifor members participated in both the Halifax Pride and St. John’s Pride parades.
Members of the Atlantic Regional Council’s LGBT Standing Committee organized the floats and got the word out to Locals to join in demonstrating the union’s continuing and ever-present commitment to inclusion and equality.
“Pride is a celebration of love and acceptance and there is nothing like being surrounded by a group of people who work every single day to make the world a better and more loving place,” said Unifor Atlantic Regional Director Jennifer Murray. “We are proud to celebrate every win for equality, including marking 20 years since Canada made same-sex marriages legal. There is truly so much to take pride in.”
Trans people have increasingly become a target for politicians and social media pundits alike, and the union recognizes that everyone has a role to play in ending stigma, pushing back against harmful legislation, and stopping any erosion of hard-won rights and freedoms.
“There are still people who question why their union would march in Pride and that’s why we still have to be here,” said Murray. “2SLGBTQIA+ rights are human rights and human rights are workers’ rights¾we all have to stand together.”
Unifor supports diversity, equity and inclusion in many ways, including through LGBT committees in workplaces and regional councils, and by developing educational resources to support equity in the workplace.
“Our work toward building understanding and welcoming spaces is not over. We are proud to represent all workers and we are continuing to show up and speak up for respect, for compassion, and for the freedom for everyone to be who they are and to love who they love,” said Murray.
