MONTREAL – Unifor condemns the major job losses announced by Paccar that will affect some 175 union members. The layoffs, which are due to take effect on August 4, come on top of the elimination of 250 jobs announced in December.
Faced with an uncertain economic context that has been exacerbated by U.S.-imposed tariffs, among other factors, the company has seen its production fall.
“This announcement clearly demonstrates the urgent need for Canada to adopt a much more ambitious buy local policy,” said Daniel Cloutier, Unifor’s Quebec Director. “In these times of economic uncertainty, we absolutely must prioritize products made in Canada.”
“With nearly 425 job losses announced since December, urgent action is needed. Concrete measures must be put in place to support the purchase of Canadian-built trucks,” he added.
Unifor fervently hopes that the government and Paccar will quickly reach an agreement aimed at limiting the impact on workers.
Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. Unifor advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
