Unifor members in Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia joined the union’s virtual town hall to hear National President Lana Payne and Atlantic Regional Director Jennifer Murray speak to tariffs impacting Canadian workers and the ongoing economic warfare and initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump.
National President Lana Payne stressed that we are in a pivotal moment that demands our collective engagement.
“As someone who has seen and experienced many economic crises, I can say truthfully that this crisis is the fight of a lifetime,” said Payne. “We are experiencing economic warfare from the U.S. right now. It is so important for us to fight back, and not every country is. But Canada is showing a very strong path in standing up to these attacks in large part due to input from Unifor.”
Atlantic Regional Director Jennifer Murray also acknowledged the current economic environment, emphasizing the need for continued member solidarity.
“We want to recognize that these have been very challenging times for many of you and I want you to know that Unifor is pushing for many things from government and from industry to protect your jobs, our Canadian jobs.” Murray recognized how the government of Newfoundland and Labrador was a leader among the provinces, organizing a roundtable that included Murray as a representative of labour, to develop strategies to protect the province’s key sectors, including energy and the fishery.
“This was a unique opportunity for government to sit with industry and labour in that they weren’t there to tell us what to do – we were able to recommend how the government should respond, and they listened,” said Murray. “We have another opportunity in New Brunswick to have conversations like this and work together to defend our industries and our jobs.”
“Every day is more uncertainty, every day is more chaos, but every day is a day that this union is standing up to defend you,” said Payne. “Let’s do it and let’s stick together!”
