Unifor pledges to bring the voice of workers to Premier Ford’s Ontario PC government following the party’s third majority win in the province.

“We fully expect the Ford government to get back to the urgent priority of defending good jobs in Ontario and securing a more resilient economy for future generations,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “The Ford government must do this by taking cues from working people and their unions.”

Ontario’s Progressive Conservative Party won a majority of seats in the February 27 election, securing a third majority mandate for the party.

“This election was about jobs and tariffs, but it was also about so much more. Ontarians are deeply concerned about health care, child care, housing and much more. We can and must expect better from our provincial government, and Unifor will continue to engage with all parties to bring worker’s perspectives to the legislature,” said Unifor Ontario Regional Director Samia Hashi.

The union encourages Premier Ford to put good jobs at the centre of the government’s plans. Ontario’s industries need support to weather the trade war ahead, and workers need strong protection like anti-scab legislation and income supports.

Ontario’s health care system remains in crisis, threatened by privatization and dangerously low staffing levels. The union calls on the newly elected government to reverse course on privatization and pay health care workers what they deserve

Ahead of the federal election, Ontario must now secure long-term funding for the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) system, keeping costs down for families and investing in public and not for profit expansion.

“With this new mandate, Premier Ford owes it to workers to stand up to Trump's tariff threats and take every measure to protect jobs and future investment,” continued Payne.

Unifor is the largest private sector union in Canada, representing more than 320,000 members in all sectors of the economy. Unifor fights for the rights of all workers. It also fights for equality and social justice at home and abroad and aspires to bring about progressive change for a better future.
