Unifor members at the Courtyard by Marriott and the W Toronto hotel have voted overwhelmingly to strike if a new collective agreement cannot be reached next month.
“Hospitality sector workers are feeling the pinch of the rising cost of living in one of the most expensive housing markets in the country,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “It is critical that collective agreements keep up with rising costs so workers don’t fall behind.”
More than 300 Unifor members of Local 112 work at the hotels. Local president John Turner says his members are concerned about inflation and the cost of housing the Greater Toronto Area: “We are eager to negotiate improvements to the collective agreement that will ease the burden of living in Toronto. Wages, benefits, and gratuities have been identified by members as a priority.”
Turner said the strike deadlines for the units will likely be set for early May 2024.
Six other hotels in the Toronto area where Local 112 members work will be bargaining in 2024, representing more than 900 members.
