Join us on May 26th, as the Unifor International and Social Justice Fund Department host a special online panel discussion exploring labour and human rights and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Taking place in 16-host cities across Canada, Mexico and the United States, over 6 million visitors and fans are estimated to attend the tournament, with over a billion more tuning in worldwide – making it the largest sporting event in the world.
Yet, there is a troubling track record when it comes to ensuring FIFA and host countries uphold basic human rights and labour protections of workers, migrant workers, journalists and fans, with serious violations often being exposed before, after and during the games.
To help unpack some of these issues and learn how human rights organizations, civil society groups and labour unions are working to hold FIFA and host countries to account, we will be joined by a panel of special guest speakers, including:
- Andrea Florence, Executive Director, Sport & Rights Alliance: discussing the monitoring and investigation work being conducted during the World Cup across all three host countries – supported by the Unifor Social Justice Fund.
- Gilberto Garcia, Regional Organizer, International Transport Workers’ Federation: providing an overview of a campaign raising awareness about safety, violence and harassment against public transit workers in Mexico.
- Lis Pimentel, Hospitality Sector Director, Unifor: highlighting key issues in the hospitality sector and faced by hospitality workers in the host cities of Toronto and Vancouver.
