Members of Unifor Local 1090 at Maple Leaf Foods ratified a new four-year agreement that sees 12% wage increases over the life of the agreement, including a 5% retro to June 1, 2024. There are special adjustments to the Skilled Trades wages, benefit improvements, vacation improvements, and signing bonuses.
Importantly, this agreement includes a major language change that restricts the use of part-time workers.
“I send my congratulations to the bargaining committee for their hard work,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Members of Local 1090 used their strength and solidarity to negotiate better working conditions and better pay. This is how we win.”
The agreement was hard-won by the bargaining committee, as early proposals from the company contained many concessions and a demand for a seven-year contract. The members, some with 26 or more years of seniority, remained confident in their committee and delivered a strong strike mandate that showed they were prepared to engage in the first strike at the facility’s history.
Through conciliation, the union was able to reject all concessionary demands that remained on the table until the deadline.
