Unifor sent a strong delegation of young women activists to the recent Women’s Convention in Detroit. The convention was organized nine months after the historic Women March on Washington rally that saw hundreds of thousands take to the streets in what has become one of the largest mass demonstrations in American history. Thousands of people in Canada, including Unifor members, and activists around the world also hosted and participated in local women’s marches that were attended by women and allies.
During October 27-29 more than 4,000 delegates heard from political and social movement leaders who are pushing forward a progressive feminist agenda. The weekend also featured a packed schedule of trainings and workshops to encourage women to be more engaged with the political process.
Organizers established the convention as an opportunity to bring women together to connect, inspire and strategize plans of action to push forward an agenda for women’s rights and political participation.

“Young feminist activists can learn a lot from some of the organizing that is happening right now in the United States. In Canada, we have our own struggles to come to terms with the sexism, racism, and homophobia that take shape in every corner of our members' lives. We brought young labour activists to Detroit because they are the leading edge of many of these fights, and we're going to bring everything we learn back home.”
