Unifor is urging members to send a letter to senators who are holding up the long-awaited adoption of Bill C-262, which will harmonize Canadian laws with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
“Canada is offside and stalling on the worldwide effort to respect and empower First Nations,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “It’s time to make things right.”
The Bill formally adopting the UNDRIP as law is accompanied by Bill C-91, An Act respecting Indigenous languages and Bill C-92, An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families. Dias says the three bills are important to reconciliation and are concrete steps the federal government can take to help Indigenous communities thrive.
“The Truth and Reconciliation Commission gave policy-makers a clear template for a path to reconciliation,” said Dias.
Initiated by the Stephen Harper government in response to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) undertook the most comprehensive Indigenous-led investigation into what actions should be taken to achieve reconciliation. The TRC’s recommendations speak explicitly to adopting the UNDRIP and reviving Indigenous languages.
