Unions need to show leadership

It’s up to unions to convince the public, starting with their own members, about the need for progressive labour laws, Kevin Rebeck, president of the Manitoba Federal of Labor, told the Unifor Regional Council recently.

“We need to provide the context for those changes to be made,” Rebeck said February 28.

In Manitoba, which has had an NDP government since 1999, it has been “frustrating” trying to convince the government to pass stronger union card check and anti-scab legislation, Rebeck said.

He said labour can help get such laws passed by convincing voters why they are needed.

Rebeck said his federation would continue to work with the Manitoba NDP to help it stay in power, while pushing it to pass better labour laws.

“Things would be a lot worse with a Conservative or Liberal government,” he warned. “If the Conservatives get elected in Manitoba, we’ll see right to work legislation the next day.”
