Dear Honourable Doug Ford,
The Ontario government’s announcement of the creation of an Ontario Jobs and Recovery Committee is welcomed news. We agree that planning a recovery strategy for workers and the economy immediately is vital to ensuring that the drastic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are dealt with as quickly and effectively as possible.
However, we urge you to formally consult with our union on the development of any future strategic planning. Your government has noted it will consult with business associations, chambers of commerce, municipal leaders, corporate leaders, small business owners, and entrepreneurs but not labour unions.
As Ontario’s largest private sector union representing more than 160,000 workers across the province, we directly represent a significant number of workers across many sectors of the economy hardest hit by the pandemic’s effects. Providing our members, who live and work in virtually every region of the province, with a say in their future is an absolute necessity.
Ontario’s economy has already suffered from a number of complex problems exposed by the pandemic.
These long-standing issues of social and economic inequality, lack of manufacturing capacity and investment in critical infrastructure, and insufficient labour standards, may only be further intensified by a recovery plan that ignores them.
If we are truly going to re-tool and re-build a better economy for all Ontarians after the State of Emergency is lifted, then all parties must work together to solve this unprecedented crisis.
Sincerely,
Jerry Dias                                 Naureen Rizvi
National President                   Ontario Regional Director
