WINNIPEG—Unifor’s Director of Indigenous Relations, Gina Smoke, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of her advocacy for truth and reconciliation and her work to advance justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2-spirit people. Winnipeg Member of Parliament Leah Gazan presented the medal to Smoke on March 4, 2025, honouring her tireless efforts to strengthen relationships between Indigenous communities and the labour movement.
“Gina’s dedication to truth and reconciliation is a shining example of the role unions must play in confronting Canada’s colonial legacy,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Her work ensures that Indigenous voices are not only heard but are actively shaping the policies and practices of our union. This recognition is well deserved.”
As Unifor’s Director of Indigenous Relations, Smoke has been instrumental in developing initiatives that support Indigenous members and communities, advocating for justice for MMIWG, and ensuring Unifor’s commitments to reconciliation are operationalized. From coast to coast, her work has helped deepen the union’s engagement with Indigenous partners and push for systemic change.
“I accept this honour on behalf of all those who continue the fight for truth, justice, and reconciliation,” said Smoke. “Our work is about making real, lasting change and empowering Indigenous communities, and I’m proud to be part of a union that takes this responsibility seriously.”
Smoke is Dakota, from Dakota Plains First Nation. She lives on Treaty 1 territory in Winnipeg. She has worked in the media for 21 years, including 19 years with CTV Winnipeg. She started her union work representing members as the Secretary of Local 816M and was later elected President. In 2013, she started her career in Unifor as a National Representative. In 2018, she was appointed the Indigenous Liaison working on reconciliation. In 2024 Smoke’s position was elevated to a director-level post.
