EDMONTON—Unifor says the report from Alberta’s Energy Diversification Advisory Committee provides a thoughtful roadmap for strengthening the province’s economy in the future.
“Domestic upgrading of energy resources means more long-term jobs for Albertans,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President.
Rather than exporting increased amounts of raw bitumen, Unifor has long called for a greater amount of bitumen to be refined within Canadian borders, citing refining’s contribution to energy security, job creation, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The report also outlines a strategy to attract investment, something Unifor also supports.
“Diversification is a good strategy for the long term,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Regional Director. “Adding value to natural resources is something that will benefit Albertans.”
Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the energy sector, with nearly 12,000 members in 125 units.
