Unifor unveils new advertisement calling on GM to save Oshawa

TORONTO – Unifor continues a major advertising campaign today with the debut of a new 30-second television commercial condemning General Motors for the decision to abandon the Oshawa assembly plant while the company continues to expand production in Mexico.

“We are making sure Canadians understand that GM is betraying Canadian taxpayers and the automaker needs to realize that if they expect Canadian consumers to remain loyal to GM vehicles, they need to be loyal to GM workers and keep building here,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor’s National President.

The new ad, which debuted Sunday during the Golden Globes broadcast, focuses on GM’s corporate greed, as following an $11 billion bailout by Canada in 2008 the company continues to shift production to Mexico, a country that did not give a dime to save GM from bankruptcy.

The spot’s tag line is “Hey GM, you want to sell here, build here.”

It is part of an ongoing advertising blitz that targets both Canadian and American audiences with television, radio, print, digital and out-of-home advertising. This major paid-advertising campaign is driving a message to a broader audience to engage and inform consumers as part of the union’s #SaveOshawaGM campaign, a nationwide call to support autoworkers and to keep good jobs in Canada.

In addition to airing on national news channels including CBC, CTV and BNN Bloomberg, the new advertisement will appear on Hockey Night in Canada and WXYZ Detroit, where GM is headquartered.

The TV advertisement is available here.

The union is also hosting a major solidarity rally on Friday, January 11 at 11:00 a.m. EST at Dieppe Gardens in Windsor, Ontario.
