EDMONTON, April 27, 2015 /CNW/ - Negotiations between Unifor and Air Canada have broken down over Air Canada's plan to outsource jobs at Toronto's Pearson International Airport. Unifor has taken its protest on the road with a march through the Edmonton International Airport today around 4:30 pm.
"The fact is Air Canada could try to outsource jobs in any airport which would reduce services for passengers and create a greater strain for travellers," said Cheryl Robinson, Unifor Local 2002 representing approximately 10,000 airline and airport workers, including at Air Canada. Robinson said the union is committed to defending these good, full time jobs at Air Canada. The Edmonton event comes on the heels of similar rallies held in Toronto, with the intention of holding other events in the coming weeks.
Buses are leaving The Chateau Lacombe Hotel at 3:45 and are expected to arrive at the airport between 4:30-4:45. Hundreds of people are expected to take place.
The rally will start on the north side of the airport and end near the Air Canada check-in counter.
The rally was held in tandem with Unifor's Prairie Regional Council, taking place in Edmonton April 27-29. The union's Prairie Regional Council is a yearly event where the priorities and goals for the Prairie Provinces are discussed and debated.
Unifor was founded Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged. With more than 305,000 members, Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector.
