France is currently the scene of a historic popular mobilization. Thousands of workers, with support from a broad coalition of unions, have shown courage by going on strike and taking to the streets to demand respect and the protection of workers’ pensions.

Unifor recognizes there are many approaches to pensions and that each country has its own systems to meet specific needs. No matter the jurisdiction, making changes to such basic rights as retirement security and the legal retirement age cannot be done without consultation with unions and workers. Through their resolve, our French brothers, sisters and comrades remind us just how important is the right to retirement security in the lives and livelihoods of workers.

The implications of this pension reform bill and the important questions they raise in regards to retired workers' economic security are matters that impact us all. That is why Unifor fully supports this movement, which speaks to the French unions’ long and rich tradition of social activism and militancy.
