Unifor is proud to be named a Groundbreaker in recognition of the union’s support of the ‘SickKids VS Limits’ campaign to redevelop Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, known as SickKids.
“This donation will help SickKids undertake a major transformation that will improve front line care and support research to treat pediatric patients,” said National President Jerry Dias.
The SickKids VS Limits campaign is the largest healthcare fundraising effort in Canadian history, with a goal of $1.3 billion to fund the Project Horizon campus redevelopment plan.
“With the support of donors a stake has been put in the ground towards building a new SickKids," said Ted Garrard, Chief Executive Officer, SickKids Foundation. "These bold, forward-thinking individuals and organizations give our campaign momentum and inspire others to join the fight. Together, with their extraordinary support, a new SickKids will rise."
Constructed in 1949, at the time the building was the largest children's hospital in the world.
On October 22, 2019 an official groundbreaking ceremony marked the first step to redevelop the aging facilities.
“It was inspiring to see children, who are also patients, put ceremonial shovels in the ground to symbolize the rebirth of SickKids,” said Dias at the future site of the Patient Support Centre, a 22 storey educational, training, and administrative tower.
Planned development phases also include the construction of the Peter Gilgan Family Patient Care Tower, which will add 144 new patient beds, three additional operating suites and a new emergency department, and renovations to the original hospital facilities to support new and updated outpatient clinics.
