On June 5, Technical office and Professional workers at Bombardier Downsview, represented by Unifor Local 673, voted 98 per cent in favour of authorizing Unifor to take strike action, if necessary, to secure a fair contract. The current contract expires on June 23, 2018.

“With the sale of Bombardier’s Downsview facility, workers are focused on ensuring there is job stability when Bombardier relocates,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President.

Unifor is also seeking improvements to wages, pension, job security and health care benefits in this round of negotiations.

“A strong mandate shows the solidarity Unifor Local 673 members have for their bargaining committee as they head back into negotiations,” said President of Unifor Local 673 Maryellen Mcllmoyle, representing 525 workers at the Downsview facility.

The decision by the Technical office and Professional workers follows a vote by Bombardier Aerospace production workers, represented by Unifor Local 112, that also provided a near-unanimous strike mandate to their bargaining committee.

Bombardier employs more than 24,000 people in Canada directly and at supplier facilities, with an estimated 40,000 spin-off jobs created as well.
