Unifor statement on the Prime Ministerial order to open Kitsilano Coast Guard Base

Vancouver—Unifor welcomes the mandate given to Fisheries and Oceans Minister Hunter Tootoo to re-open the Kitsilano Coast Guard Base. The base was the first of the two Coast Guard bases in the Port of Vancouver closed by the Stephen Harper government with no rationale or clear plan to uphold the highest standard of marine safety. The Marine Traffic and Communications Centre was closed in early May of this year.

Unifor looks forward to working with the new government to strengthen the Canadian Coast Guard by halting any further closures, restoring funding for those services, and maintaining a physical Coast Guard communications presence in all affected regions.

Unifor represents 300 Coast Guard Marine Communications Officers on both coasts and is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
