Unifor stands in solidarity with Korean trade unions in defence of democracy.
Unifor stands in full support and solidarity with labour unions across South Korea in the wake of protests against sitting President Yoon Suk Yeol and his attempt to subvert democracy and impose martial law in the country.
Unifor supports the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and their over 1.1 million trade union members, including those from our allied unions of the Korean Federation of Public Services and Transportation Workers' Unions (KPTU) and the Korean Metal Workers' Union (KMWU), among others, currently mobilizing and organizing a nation-wide general strike calling for President Yoon’s resignation.
Unions are the foundation of any strong democracy, and we condemn any and all attacks that would erode the democratic rights and freedoms of workers. If not challenged, we know that attacks on trade unions are never far behind, as was experienced in 2015 when hundreds of Korean trade union members and leaders were investigated, detained and jailed for participating in political protests. Unifor will continue showing our support and solidarity with the unions, workers and people of South Korea and all those who stand up for peace and justice.
