Unifor joins more than 100 groups calling on Ontario Premier Ford to secure the future of affordable child care in Ontario. The union signed onto today’s joint letter prepared by the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care along with other child care programs, provincial early learning and child care associations, and unions, policy and advocacy groups.

In January, while the province of Ontario was in an election period, the federal government invited all thirteen provinces and territories to sign 5-year funding extensions to the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care plan.

Now that the election is over, securing federal child care funding to 2031 should be a top priority for the provincial government.

“On the eve of a federal election where the Conservatives have criticized and threatened the $10 a Day program. Time is running out to secure this funding for Ontario families. I urge Premier Ford and all MPPs to act,” said Unifor Ontario Regional Director Samie Hashi.

As families experience a worsening affordability crisis, child care is one of the few expenses that has decreased for many. The province needs to protect the $10 a Day program, pay child care workers better, and invest in new public and not for profit child care spaces.

Unifor members can join the call by signing onto the Parents for Child Care’s open letter today. This tool will send your message to Premier Ford, your MPP and federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development of Canada, Jenna Sudds.
