Unifor is saddened to learn of the passing of labour activist and former national leader of the Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU), Garry Worth.

Garry is remembered as a dedicated rank-and-file leader who spent his life fighting for workers’ rights. He began his activism as a millwright at the Weyerhaeuser mill in Kamloops in the early 1970s, during the time the plant was joining the Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canada (PPWC), part of the CCU.

He went on to serve as National President of the PPWC and later as President of the CCU, where he played a leading role in industry bargaining in British Columbia’s pulp and paper sector, including during the 9-month Fletcher Challenge strike of 1997–1998.

Garry was instrumental in bringing his union into the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP), retiring as a proud CEP member. He remained a passionate advocate for workers through his involvement in social movements, political campaigns, and the labour movement in B.C. until his recent illness.

Unifor extends condolences to Garry’s family, friends, and comrades. His legacy of worker advocacy will not be forgotten.
