In the face of a rabidly anti-worker government in Alberta led by Premier Danielle Smith, unions in every sector of the economy have started discussions about how to effectively present a united front.

A meeting was co-ordinated on January 21 by the Alberta Federation of Labour that sought to form the basis of more integrated organizing in the event of future attacks by Smith’s conservative government. Unifor was represented by Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle and Prairie Regional Chairperson Guy Desforges. McGarrigle was encouraged by the dialogue and said that solidarity was critical to resisting regressive legislation and defend the right to strike.

“We know that the government won’t limit its attacks to one union or one sector,” he said. “Workers across the province can be successful if we treat an attack on one of us as an attack on all of us. We can fight and we can win.”
